PRETTY UGLY!

Web design has, to put it gently, made great strides since the 2000s.

Traffic Magazine put together a cool timeline looking at the evolution of the internet and web design, with an assist from the Wayback Machine. Here's a look at some of the sites that didn't make the cut — some have definitely changed more than others.

Old Media Meets The Web

The Wall Street Journal

Some things never change — one being that most of the Wall Street Journal's website is behind a paywall.

BBC

No one would accuse the BBC's current website of being the prettiest site around, but the British network has come a long, long way from this.

CNN

Apart from some small aesthetic makeovers, CNN hasn't changed a whole ton since 2000.

The Digital Natives

Buzzfeed

Fewer lists, fewer recipes, but all in all, fairly familiar.

Tumblr

Tumblelogs! How did that word not survive?

CNET

You've come a long way, CNET.

Vimeo

Known as the internet home of good, artsy videos, Vimeo had a less than artful start.

Some Random Website

It was good then. It's good now (if we do say so ourselves).
